The 3 Top Dog Friendly Things to do on the Beara Peninsula

Do you have a happy place?

Maybe a summer home near the sea or the shade of an oak in your favourite park?

I have a few to be honest, but these days, my favourite place to be is the little garden here, especially when the doggies are running around, having fun.

The Beara Peninsula can be great for adventures with your dog if you know where to go. I know travelling with dogs can be stressful enough, so I am here to make it easier for you.

Here are my top 3 dog friendly things to do on the Beara Peninsula:

1 A Walk at Dunboy and a dip at Pulleen

What’s your favourite outdoor activity? As the weather is warming up here in Beara, I’m LOVING the long walks with the dogs and a dip at Pulleen Harbour every now and then (if I’m brave enough!). Sea swimming is so refreshing, isn’t it?

Whether it’s a walk or a dip, it is so refreshing to spend time in the great outdoors and it’s perfect to clear my mind and get some exercise!

The walks at Dunboy Castle & Puxley Manor is one of the most beautiful I know and it offers great views of Bere Island and the lighthouse, Castletownbere, Sheep’s Head and Mizen Head. The loop walk isn’t completely dog friendly (you can’t do the last loop with a dog), but the other walks there are, so enjoy!

2 Gleninchaquin Park

Gleninchaquin Park provides breathtaking views and a whole range of things to do and explore. It’s perfect for exploring all day long, whether you’re alone or with your entire family. The park features six walking routes and the routes take you around the beautiful waterfall, streams, woodlands and lakes. Even dogs are welcome here, but be sure to keep them under control, especially when you are close to livestock.

3 A walk in Glengarriff and a picnic

Glengarriff is a lovely little town with neatly painted shopfronts, cafés, pubs and craft shops. Expect it to be overrun in summer with tourists, but it’s lovely and quiet in late spring and early autumn. The area around Glengarriff is filled with beautiful green gardens, islands and thick woods.

Glengarriff Woods Nature Reserve is a dog friendly must if you love nature as much as the doggies and I do!

Situated in the northwest of Glengarriff village, it was once the private estate of the Earl of Bantry. The ancient oak woodland is still there and wow - it’s beautiful!

There are big old trees, ferns, mosses, squirrels and otters and kingfishers along the river.

Walking trails take you from the main car park through the nature reserve and it’s such a great place to explore, let everything in your mind go where it belongs, take a deep breath and reconnect with nature. The Nature Reserve features a range of walking trails (currently five) and picnic areas.
