It’s Time to visit Ireland’s Only Cable Car

Dursey Island Cable Car is not only Cork’s but Ireland’s only cable car. It’s located in the southwest of Ireland on the Beara Peninsula and connects Dursey Island with the mainland.

On top of that, Dursey Cable Car is the only cable car that crosses open seawater in all of Europe, travelling 25 metres above the water. It can take up to six people, with journeys lasting 15 minutes each way.

The famous transport system offers visitors scenic walking routes, and spectacular wildlife watching too - from birds to whales and dolphins.

Dursey Island also has a historical burial ground and several other historical features.

Dursey Island Cable Car was originally opened on December 5, 1969, by former Taoiseach Jack Lynch. Since then, it’s been serving locals and their livestock, travelling from the island as the local tidal conditions at Dursey sound are hazardous.

Nowadays, mainly tourists and local farmers use it. It underwent a €1.6 million upgrade (from April 2022 until spring 2023), and only reopened recently in June.
