Embracing Slow Living: A Day on Cudeen's Farm

Discover the joy and simplicity of slow living on Cudeen's Farm. Learn how our daily routines and connection with nature can help you unwind and find peace.

Morning Routines:

Mornings on Cudeen's Farm start with the soft light of dawn and the gentle sounds of nature waking up - or a goat complaining that breakfast is too late again. The first task of the day is feeding the animals – Brody the donkey brays a cheerful good morning, while Stevie the premature calf eagerly awaits his bottle of milk and electrolytes. These quiet moments of connection set a peaceful tone for the day. Fionn and Eddie, the 2- and 1- year old Connemara ponies have fun doing some exercises with me; it’s the basic horse ABC, and they are doing great!

Afterward, it's time for checking in on the vegetables and fruit in the tunnel, greenhouse and outside beds, including some weeding and repotting; followed by a hearty farm-fresh breakfast, featuring eggs from our own chickens and homemade butter, enjoyed with the backdrop of the beautiful green fields.

Midday Activities:

As the sun climbs higher, it’s perfect for a walk around the farm. Brody loves these strolls, often leading the way with playful energy. Along the path, you'll meet our other friendly animals and learn about our sustainable farming practices, which aim to preserve the natural beauty of the Beara Peninsula. The tranquility of the landscape, from rolling hills to green fields, offers a sense of calm and reflection.

Afternoon ‘Relaxation’:

While our afternoons are for office hours, fixing gear, getting our Farm Cottage ready for our next guests or working with the ponies, I always encourage our guests to go exploring along the scenic beauty of the Beara Peninsula. A drive along the coastal roads reveals breathtaking views and hidden trails waiting to be discovered. Hungry Hill, with its mist-covered peaks, and the dramatic cliffs of Dursey Island, accessed via Ireland's only cable car, are just a few of the natural wonders. The coastal road at Reentrusk between Allihies and Eyeries offers stunning seascapes that are perfect for contemplation and photography.

Evening Bliss:

As the day winds down, there's nothing like sharing stories by the fire. Our homegrown veg offer you the chance to make your own farm-to-table dinners, prepared with fresh, local ingredients - they are always such a highlight. The night ends with stargazing under the clear skies, far from city lights. These simple pleasures remind us of the beauty of slow living and the deep connection we share with nature.
